Inspiration
I paint what I want to paint. Whether it sells or not, isn't my focus. That freedom combined with my use of free flowing “alla prima” techniques allows artistic creations to flow spontaneously through my soul onto canvass, I am inspired by past and present masters and... call it nature... call it God,,, as they paint through me, I hope you are inspired.
From as young of an age as I can remember creating art was the one thing along with nature that ALWAYS brought me joy! And as often as not the one subject I could count on for easy “A”!
Fast forward to the 80’s and an art shop in Lahina on the island of Maui. Painting in a detailed realistic style often for tourists using acrylics. Subjects varied widely from people’s pets to fingernail art! Whatever it took to keep our “family” of artists and musicians in the "green". Nature...Art... Music... fun in the Sun!

Techniques
My style of painting reflects the evolution of my art techniques over more than a few decades! I now typically use a mix of some acrylics and mostly oils. Sometimes I'll do a rough sketch, other times I’ll just let the painting flow from my soul through my fingers. For many years I painted in exacting detail what I saw.

As I’ve matured I’ve come to appreciate the power of the "alla prima" style of painting (also known as “direct painting” or “wet on wet” oil painting). Many artists seem to struggle with "alla prima" painting. This usually comes down to a lack of understanding about how to control and manipulate paint. Other times it might be an inability to paint loose and relaxed. It set me free! To me, it’s the best way to reflect the spontaneous perfectly imperfect way nature presents itself.
I start with a base and blend, and blend, and blend... as the canvass seems to magically and somewhat randomly like nature come to life out of “chaos”. It’s a very free and spontaneous style that I’ve come to absolutely love. That spontaneity combined with my roots in very detailed and refined drawings brings a balance of energy to my creations now that often surprises even me!

asTER... ἀστήρ... Our star
Aster comes from the ancient Greek word meaning "star" or "heavenly body". My name is Stu. Call me Aster's life partner, best friend, business consultant and #1 Fan. When I first met Aster I was amazed by her intelligence, joy for life, always positive attitude, gentle spirit, inner strength, musical talent.. I could go on!

She never mentioned her art. When one day she humbly brought out some for me to see, “blown away” doesn’t adequately describe the moment. She had put away many things in her life including art, while for years she cared for family, friends & terminally ill husband.
I said and did everything I could to encourage her to pick up the brush again. When she did, she discovered more than any time in the past, that painting brought her a deep inner joy. With each progressive painting I and her closest friends became more convinced that the art that brings her joy... would bring joy to others.
At the time of writing this, a few days before this website was launched, my hope is to allow her to continue doing what she loves, while I help her share that with others. Perhaps you!
And oh… by the way… you ain’t seen noth’n yet! Be sure to check back here often, as she’s creating new pieces every month, and she has shared with me some AMAZING ideas she has for future ambitious projects.
